during this lesson, you will be introduced to a three dimensional grid system. this grid system is based on the society of automotive engineer's recommended practice j182. the right hand rule. this graphic is a visualization of the right hand rule as it relates to an automobile. the right hand rule is applied by extending the right hand toward the hood of the vehicle with the index finger extended. the origin point of the grid system starts forward of the vehicle about one meter, "x,0", at the center of the vehicle, "y,0", and about one meter below the bottom of the floor or top of the frame of the vehicle, "z,0". the "x" direction arrow measures distances from the origin point towards the rear of the vehicle in positive millimeter increments. any "x" direction measurements forward of the origin point will be negative. the "y" direction arrow measures distances from the origin point across the vehicle starting at the centerline in positive millimeter increments. any "y" direction measurements left of the origin will be negative. the "z" direction arrow measures distances from the origin point upward in the vehicle in positive millimeter increments. any "z" direction measurements below the origin will be negative. any measurements on the "x" plane will be described in "y" and "z" coordinates. any measurements on the "y" plane will be described in "x" and "z" coordinates. any measurements on the "z" plane will be described in "x" and "y" coordinates. the dynamic movement of the vehicle is described in terms of how the vehicle responds to forces applied to it through its center of gravity. the descriptions of vehicle dymamics are defined in the sae j2084. the yaw dynamic of a vehicle is the angular movement about a "z" axis through the center of gravity of the vehicle. the yaw dynamic is measured as positive when the front of the vehicle rotates to the right. the pitch dynamic of a vehicle is the angular movement about a "y" axis through the center of gravity of the vehicle. the roll dynamic of a vehicle is the angular movement about an "x" axis through the center of gravity of the vehicle. the roll dynamic is measured as positive when the right side of the vehicle rotates downward.

the following animation will show these movements in action. video slide the third angle form of projection is the most common type used in north american automotive engineering. the first angle form of projection is used in europe and other automotive engineering communities.

the following animation will demonstrate how these projections relate to orientation of the view. video slide the vehicle is most commonly shown as a left side view elevation (depicted in the right portion of the screen). the front view shows the front of the vehicle. the second most common view is the plan view which shows the overhead view of the vehicle. the rear view shows the rear of the vehicle (shown on the left portion of the screen). the bottom view shows the bottom of the vehicle (shown below the front view). the vehicle body-in-white is typically the welded assembly of the body components, without bolted-on doors, fenders, hoods, decklids, or lift gates. the term, "in-white", describes the welded assembly without any paint or primer and the metal showing the clean grey or white.

the following animation will show the vehicle body-in-white hung from an overhead conveyor. the vehicle is cleaned and then submerged into the electro coat liquid. an electrical charge is put on the body to attract the primer. video slide the vehicle body-in-white, now e-coated, is drained and allowed to dry and then is ready for body color painting. you have now completed this lecture. you have learned to identify:
 - the sae j182 three dimensional grid system
 - the right hand rule of vehicle orientation
 - the coordinates available for measurements on each of the "x", "y" and "z" planes
 - the concept of describing vehicle dynamic movement as
 "yaw", "pitch" and "roll"
 - the concept of 1st and 3rd angle projection
 - the naming of 3rd angle projection views
 - the vehicle body-in-white as a welded assembly
 - the process of electro coating the body assembly

we will now advance to the quiz portion of this lesson. <br/>", "overdue_email_after": false, "fail_retake": false, "keywords": "Body, Design, Engineering, Automotive, CAD", "fail_action": "", "notification_email": false, "access_token_redemption_count": 0, "completion_type": "", "title": "Vehicle Orientation", "overdue_email_after_text": null, "encoded_id": "EPmr5vslIK", "is_viewed": false, "overdue_days_email": false, "parent_id": null, "private_views": 0, "fail_email_text": null, "status": "active", "sharing": "public", "description": "During this lesson, you will be introduced to a three dimensional grid system.
