At PDC today, Microsoft gave the first public demonstration of Windows7. Until now, the company has been uncharacteristically secretive aboutits new OS; over the past few months, Microsoft has let on that thetaskbar will undergo a number of changes, and that many bundledapplications would be unbundled and shipped with Windows Live instead.There have also been occasional screenshots of some of the new appletslike Calculator and Paint. Now that the covers are finally off, thescale of the new OS becomes clear. The user interface has undergone themost radical overhaul and update since the introduction of Windows 95thirteen years ago.First, however, it's important to note what Windows 7 isn't. Windows7 will not contain anything like the kind of far-reaching architecturalmodifications that Microsoft made with Windows Vista. Vista brought anew display layer and vastly improved security, but that came at acost: a significant number of (badly-written) applications haddifficulty running on Vista. Applications expecting to run withAdministrator access were still widespread when Vista was released, andthough many software vendors do a great job, there are still those thathaven't updated or fixed their software. Similarly, at its launch manyhardware vendors did not have drivers that worked with the new sound orvideo subsystems, leaving many users frustrated.While windows 7 doesn't undo these architectural changes—they wereessential for the long-term health of the platform—it equally hasn'tmade any more. First impressionsThe Mini 1000 is easily one of the most attractive netbooks we haveseen yet with a smooth black plastic casing that has the HP imprinttechnology on the lid.  The device is less than an inch thick, one ofHP's design goals, and starts at 2.2 pounds making the Mini 1000 one ofthe thinnest and lightest netbooks around.  The build quality is superband feels very sturdy in the hand and could easily take the rigors oftraveling.The first thing we checked out on the Mini 1000 was the keyboard asthe outstanding keyboard on the Mini-Note is easily the best on anynetbook.  We are happy to report that HP listened to the praise of thatkeyboard and the Mini 1000 has retained the same keyboard.  Thiskeyboard is 92% the size of a full keyboard and it is tailor-made fortouch typing like a banshee.  It feels good to use and has no poorlyplaced keys which is common on other netbooks.  This is still the bestkeyboard we have used to date on a netbook and kudos to HP for stickingwith what works.(by James Kendrick source)

Microsoftannounced this morning at its PDC conference that the next release ofMicrosoft Office will include browser-based versions of some of itsmain office software products - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.These will be "lightweight versions", but Microsoft told us yesterdaythat they'll still have rich functionality and will be comparable toGoogle's suite of online office applications. The apps will enableusers to create, edit and collaborate on Microsoft Office documentsthrough the browser. The apps will work in IE, Firefox and Safaribrowsers (no word on whether Google Chrome will be supported). Update:Commenter Sean, who says he works on the project, said that this willbe 100% HTML + AJAX - rather than Silverlight or a proprietary MSplug-in.The online versions will share the same names as their desktopcounterparts (Word, Excel, etc), although unfortunately they don'tfully escape the awkward and confusing branding that Microsoft gives tomost of its Internet apps. The collective name for these apps is"Office Web Applications". India launched its first mission to the moon Wednesday, rocketing a satellite up into the pale dawn sky in a two-year mission to redraw maps of the lunar surface. Clapping and cheering scientists tracked the ascent on computer screens after they lost sight of Chandrayaan-1 from the Sriharikota space center in southern India. Chandrayaan means "Moon Craft" in ancient Sanskrit. Indian Space Research Organization chairman G. Madhavan Nair said the mission is to "unravel the mystery of the moon." "We have started our journey to the moon and the first leg has gone perfectly well," he said. Chiefamong the mission's goals is mapping not only the surface of the moon,but what lies beneath. If successful, India will join what's shaping upas a 21st century space race with Chinese and Japanese crafts already in orbit around the moon. To date only the U.S., Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan and China have sent missions to the moon.(from yahoo)

Got some gas today on the way in, and just as I put the nozzle in the car, a voice that I could not avoid spoke to me from behind.  It said; “Are you tired of your low mileage vehicle?  Then come on down to your GM dealer and explore all of the fuel efficient options we offer!”  It went something like that anyway.Of course, it was one of those annoying video screens on the top of the gas pump that are normally telling me about something I really don’t care to hear about as I feed my mechanized monster, but this time, I heard it loud and clear.  I nearly stormed off to my friendly neighborhood GM dealer even though I had just leased a new Dodge minivan (yep, I did what I said I’d never do) only 3 weeks ago.Wow, talk about getting your message to your target audience at the exact moment they are feeling the pain that you purport to have the cure for.  Nearly perfect, and it got me to thinking how we can get our messages across every day at the right time, and at the right place… or more likely, how we don’t do this.We live in the information age of course, and never before has it been so easy to access what you need to know, when you need to know it.  Whatever holes there were as far as having access to that information have been largely plugged by Google.  However, most information still has to be sought out by the seeker.  We have to proactively locate a search appliance, and at least have a clue as to what keywords will cause the search mechanism to find what we need to know.So I wonder, what’s next in the world of context sensitivity?  Will we ever get to the point where… say I’m having trouble figuring out how to forward a phone call, and sensing that I’m having diffculty, a little hologram guy pops out of the top of the phone and tells me how to do it?A glimpse of how far context sensitivity could be taken can be seen in the movie “Minority Report” where Tom Cruise is walking along a hallway, and the massive video screens curtail their message to him specifically as he passes them.  I don’t think any of us would like to see it go that far, but what’s a happy medium?  At what point is context sensitivity annoying vs. helpful?  What say ye?

Scientists involved in a historic "Big Bang" experiment to begin this week hope it will turn up many surprises about the universe and its origins -- but reject suggestions it will bring the end of the world.The world's most powerful particle accelerator will be launched on Wednesday (September 10) at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), based in Geneva. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is in an underground ring tunnel of 27 kilometres (17 miles) beneath the French-Swiss border. Scientists will recreate conditions just after what was known as "The Big Bang" by colliding two beams of particles at close to the speed of light in a bid to understand the origins of the universe. Critics say the $9 billion dollar project is a doomsday machine that could destroy the planet. Google Chrome, one of the worst kept secrets in modern computing, promises to provide faster browsing, and an easy to understand environment.While those benefits might help us consumers right now, Google's long term strategy behind Chrome is to better support web-based applications, and of course, to get a foothold on our desktops.Yes, it can be said that Google Chrome is Google's first serious attempt to chip away at the desktop operating system, like Windows and even Mac OS.The future, as Google sees it, is a search-based world, and they are either just plain right, or it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. iPhone 3G - You Can Buy It But You Cant Use It.You would think that after six months of nearly nonstop iPhone hype,Apple would have been ready for the big day when it finally came.
