GALVESTON, Texas -- Texas authorities busy trying to clean up after Hurricane Ike have a new problem on their hands: There's a tiger loose. A county official said Tuesday that the animal somehow left its enclosure at an exotic pets center in Crystal Beach. Animal experts are coming in to try to catch the tiger. Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough put it this way: "Turns out there's a tiger, and I understand he's hungry ... so we're staying away from him." Crystal Beach is on Bolivar Peninsula. The area is one of the hardest-hit by Ike. The news follows reports of a lioness holed up in a Baptist church with its owner on Bolivar Peninsula. The full-grown lion was from a local zoo, and the owner was trying to drive to safety with the animal when he saw cars and trucks stranded in the rising floodwaters. He knew he and the lion were in trouble.

A German shepherd dog saved his owner's life by calling for an ambulance when the man suffered a seizure.Police officers in Scottsdale, Arizona, could hear the whimpering and barking of Buddy after receiving the 911 call.Dispatcher Chris Trott can be heard on a recording of the incident saying: "Hello, this is 911. Hello... Can you hear me? Is there somebody there you can give the phone to?"Police were sent to Joe Stalnaker's home and after about three minutes Buddy is heard on the recording barking loudly when they arrive.Mr Stalnaker's address was flagged in the Scottsdale system's with a notification that a trained assistance dog could call 911 when the owner was incapacitated.Police explained Mr Stalnaker adopted Buddy at the age of eight weeks from Michigan-based Paws with a Cause, which trains assistance dogs.Buddy, now 18 months old, has been trained to press programmed buttons until a 911 operator is on the line, should his owner suffer seizure symptoms. This was the third time he has called the emergency services on behalf of Mr Stalnaker.Scottsdale police sergeant Mark Clark said Mr Stalnaker spent two days in a hospital but has recovered from the seizure. He said: "It's pretty incredible. Even the veteran dispatchers - they haven't heard of anything like this."Sgt Clark added Mr Stalnaker's seizures are the result of a head injury he suffered about 10 years ago during a military training exercise.

DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle on Tuesday, allowing outsiders their first full look at the car GM says will go on sale in 2010."The Volt symbolizes GM's commitment to the future," said Rick Wagoner, the company's chairman and CEO.The Volt will be driven by electricity stored in a large T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack running the length of the car. After charging for several hours, the Volt will be able to run for up to about 40 miles without using gasoline.GM did not announce pricing for the car, which will have the equivalent of about 150 horsepower and a top speed of 100 mph, the automaker said.To charge the batteries, drivers will plug a cord into one of the ports just ahead of the driver's side mirror. The cord can then be attached to an ordinary home electrical outlet. The car will cost "less than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee" to recharge, and use less electricity annually than a refrigerator. The Volt should cost less than 2 cents per mile to drive on electricity, GM said, compared to 12 cents a mile on gasoline at a price of $3.60 a gallon. As the battery begins to run down as the car is in use, a small gasoline engine will turn on and generate enough electricity to drive the car about 300 miles. The car's zero-to-sixty time will be under nine seconds, said GM vehicle line director Tony Posawatz. That would make the performance about average for a modern car."The center of gravity of the car, with the center battery pack, it's going to have real great ride and handling," said Posawatz.

Got some gas today on the way in, and just as I put the nozzle in the car, a voice that I could not avoid spoke to me from behind. It said; “Are you tired of your low mileage vehicle? Then come on down to your GM dealer and explore all of the fuel efficient options we offer!†It went something like that anyway.Of course, it was one of those annoying video screens on the top of the gas pump that are normally telling me about something I really don’t care to hear about as I feed my mechanized monster, but this time, I heard it loud and clear. I nearly stormed off to my friendly neighborhood GM dealer even though I had just leased a new Dodge minivan (yep, I did what I said I’d never do) only 3 weeks ago.Wow, talk about getting your message to your target audience at the exact moment they are feeling the pain that you purport to have the cure for. Nearly perfect, and it got me to thinking how we can get our messages across every day at the right time, and at the right place… or more likely, how we don’t do this.We live in the information age of course, and never before has it been so easy to access what you need to know, when you need to know it. Whatever holes there were as far as having access to that information have been largely plugged by Google. However, most information still has to be sought out by the seeker. We have to proactively locate a search appliance, and at least have a clue as to what keywords will cause the search mechanism to find what we need to know.So I wonder, what’s next in the world of context sensitivity? Will we ever get to the point where… say I’m having trouble figuring out how to forward a phone call, and sensing that I’m having diffculty, a little hologram guy pops out of the top of the phone and tells me how to do it?A glimpse of how far context sensitivity could be taken can be seen in the movie “Minority Report†where Tom Cruise is walking along a hallway, and the massive video screens curtail their message to him specifically as he passes them. I don’t think any of us would like to see it go that far, but what’s a happy medium? At what point is context sensitivity annoying vs. helpful? What say ye?

The short - but eventful - life of Ike In its brief lifespan of only 13 days, Hurricane Ike wreaked great deal of havoc. Affecting several countries including Cuba, Haiti, and the United States, Ike is blamed for approximately 114 deaths (74 in Haiti alone), and damages that are still being tallied, with estimates topping $10 billion. Many shoreline communities of Galveston, Texas were wiped from the map by the winds, storm surge and the walls of debris pushed along by Ike - though Galveston was spared the level of disaster it suffered in 1900.Link to original story and comments.
